Chapter Twenty-Six
Cole
At the top of the stairs, I listen for sounds of my family to give me an idea of which direction to go. But the answer is provided by the heavenly scent of coffee. The kitchen. I bound down the steps, only momentarily regretting not forcing my way into the bathroom and helping Harbor with her shower. But coffee wins out.
My bare feet slap on the wooden treads as I near the bottom of the stairs. The living room is quiet and remains tidy. Sofia and Emilia must have just gotten here if everything is still in place.
âSoâ¦â My sister pops her head into the living room with a dishtowel in her hand.
âSo, what?â I school my face to keep from grinning and barely succeed. Itâs impossible not to be happy that Harbor and I are together. Even if we werenât planning on anyone but Layla and Kameron knowing.
âYou know, so, what.â She arches her eyebrows and gives me a knowing look. âWho is upstairs?â
âHarbor upstairs.â Sofia runs out of the kitchen and slams into me.
I swing her off her feet as she latches herself around my hips.
âYes, Harbor is upstairs, but sheâs taking a shower. Sheâll be down later.â If she doesnât sneak out the back and disappear by shimmying down the drainpipe. She didnât want anyone else to know. What if this sends her running back to San Francisco?
âWhatâs going on between the two of you besides the obvious sleepover? Is this one sleepover? Or multiple sleepovers?â
I brush past my sister in search of my caffeine fix. Not that I should probably drink it with my stomach churning.
âWeâre seeing each other but not telling anyone.â
âWhich is why I thought you were alone and came in. Otherwise, I wouldâve waited and definitely wouldnât have sent Sofia up to wake you.â
âThanks for the coffee.â I kiss Sofiaâs temple and pour a liberal amount of coffee into a white mug. The swirls of steam waft upward. I turn around while blowing into the liquid and rest my backside against the counter.
âYouâre welcome.â Emilia opens her mouth to say more and snaps it shut. She slings a dishtowel over her shoulder and tucks a strand of hair behind her ear.
I take the first sip and sigh. Last night was amazing, but Iâm drained, and I must go into the station in a couple of hours. Caffeine is the only thing thatâs going to save me at this point.
âSofia, go to the playroom and see if you can find the Barbie with the red dress.â
âYes, Mommy.â She climbs down as I deposit her feet on the floor. And sheâs off.
âIs it serious?â Her eyes are solemn as she surveys me and moves across the kitchen until there are only a few feet between us.
âYes, itâs serious.â I frown as I consider my answer while sitting the mug down. âOr at least, I hope itâs serious. We havenât talked a lot about what the future looks like. Just that we want to see each other and determine whether weâre good together before telling everyone.
